Report: CMLL Surprised By Cheers For Averno During Mistico Hair Vs. Mask Main Event At 93rd Anniversary Show

Mistico and Averno have been tied together since Mistico's first match under the mask in 2004 and they finally had a Lucha de Apuestas match in the main event of CMLL's 93rd Anniversary Show, but the fan reaction saw Mistico be booed, while Averno was loudly cheered.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the fan reaction surprised CMLL management, with the crowd response ultimately due to the number of hardcore Lucha Libre fans in attendance at the 93rd Anniversary Show.

"Unlike most Fridays when there's 30 per cent Americans at the show, this was not many Americans. This was not the tourists, not the casual fans, this was the hardcore fans who got their tickets… When they would have the big show, the Homenaje show, the Anniversary show, you would get those people who would go to two shows a year, but they're the hardcore fans and they'd always cheer the heels and boo the tecnicos… In this case, this was how it was described to me, as far as the Averno-Mistico match, that it's all the hardcore fans, and as soon as that four-way ended with Mistico and Averno winning, its like, 'Okay, Mistico and Averno are doing Mask vs. Hair and everyone in the building knows the finish.' So they decided to cheer Averno because they knew he was losing anyway. That was the explanation. Now, I know that the office was very surprised at that. That was the one thing that they told me was like they were not expecting that," Meltzer said.

The final announced match of CMLL 93rd Anniversary was a four-way elimination tag team match of rivals teaming together as Mistico & Averno took on Templario & Ultimo Guerrero, Barbaro Carvernario & Dragon Rojo Jr., and Star Jr. & Zandokan Jr, with the winners moving on to an immediate Lucha de Apuestas match. Mistico and Averno did indeed win, last eliminating Templario and Ultimo Guerrero, which led to their Hair vs. Mask Match.

The widely praised match featured plenty of cheers for Averno, who lost to Mistico after tapping out to La Mistica. The crowd in Arena Mexico booed while Averno was having his head shaved, but they wildly cheered when Averno attacked Mistico after half his head was shaved and unmasked Mistico and his El Sky Team stablemates Mascara Dorada and Neon.
